| Cisco Certified for local area and wide area
networking/internetworking. Microsoft Certified to
supply, configure, maintain and administer Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server and
Small Business Server 2000 software - this was the most effective and manageable server software solution
for businesses with up to 50 PC's UNTIL THE ARRIVAL OF
SMALL BUSINESS SERVER 2003.
Small Business Server 2000 offered tremendous value for money as it incorporated FOUR Microsoft .Net server products (Windows 2000, Exchange, ISA & SQL) plus FIVE additional applications and services (Outlook, FrontPage, Fax sharing, Modem sharing, Health Monitor) - all for less than the combined cost of Windows 2000 Server and Exchange!!! Small Business Server 2003 raises the stakes by offering two versions and lowering the entry cost into enterprise server networking, whilst raising the amount of licenses by 50% to 75!!! Combine this with Windows 2000 or XP Professional equipped client computers for your staff and you have the most stable, secure and configurable network to run your business on. Click the images below for an in depth look at this fantastic product and it's components. One of the new additions to Small Business Server 2003 is the addition of SharePoint Services, which is tightly integrated with Office 2003 to give an unprecedented collaborative workspace for your business. Click here to find out more. Remote working and in particular Outlook Web Access has been improved to such a level that it is barely distinguishable from an Outlook 2003 client running on the user's PC. Some of the email features with Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2003 greatly assist with the modern day problems with email - spam prevention and synchronizing offline Outlook data over remote links. Microsoft found that over 80% of businesses that deployed Small Business Server 2000 didn't need or want SQL server and found ISA Server too complicated (as did most small business IT consultants!). So the Standard version was created without these components along with FrontPage. The result is definitely a case of "less is more", as the hardware specification does not need to be as high as with the previous version, overall costs are lower and the installation runs faster. Security, reliability and stability are also improved together with better out of the box data backup features in conjunction with the volume shadow copy feature. You can now manage critical data backup with a DVD RAM or R/W drive without additional backup software required, unless you need the extra features of course. If you fall into the remaining 20% who need SQL Server 2000, then buying the Premium version of Small Business Server is without doubt the least cost way of getting it. You will also get ISA Server 2000 and FrontPage 2003 to install too if you wish. For a low-tech overview explore What is Small Business Server 2003? Antivirus Antivirus scanning is the only additional software you need to purchase and we recommend Trend Micro's Client Server Messaging Suite for Small Business Server (2000 & 2003) provides anti virus support and scanning for all your files and email on the network plus full automatic updating of virus definition files. Three products (Server Protect, Scanmail Exchange and Officescan) at one bundled price offers really affordable security and control.
